From the year 2019, we had been planning our 30th birthday celebration for the year 2020. Amongst the plans that I had were bungee jumping to confront my fear of heights; themed picnic and boardgames day with my siblings and family; a themed dinner party with friends and a night out at the club! We were going to have an all-weekend celebration! Little did we know that COVID-19 had its own plans! We were in Quarantine since March the 26th 2020. There was no way our plans were going to materialize because of the pandemic which put the world in quite a state!
By mid-April, I knew that we were not going to see the freedom of being outside with our loved ones anytime soon! It was going to take a while! So I started secretively replanning our birthdays! It was important for us to celebrate because we felt that 30 years was a milestone. We have known each other for 10 years. This was a momentous occasion for us. It was especially important to me that I make my husband’s day special because he never celebrates his birthdays and is very awkward with surprises. He’s always the one planning the surprises in our home.
After much deliberation. I settled with an indoor picnic birthday celebration for my husband. Being a savvy wife that I am; I used a couch throw, a fleece blanket, cushions, a happy birthday sign, and balloons which we had stored away somewhere in the house. My mother-in-law baked him a delicious vanilla cake decorated with a bass guitar; his favorite instrument. Then I bought his favorite snacks. I couldn’t cook without him noticing something was up because quarantine has us in each other’s faces the whole time. So I stepped out to get some “essentials” and came back to set up when he fetched his birthday cake from his mother’s. Our daughter Kebotlhale, helped me with the setup. To put the cherry on top; a week before his birthday I had asked some of his friends who has had a great impact in his life for the past 10 years to record a minute-long video doing an impersonation of him then sending a birthday shout out at the end. Then I put them all together into one edited video. The smile on his face was priceless! That was more than enough for me.
On my birthday which was 5 days later after his; 17th May. We used the same props, with a bit more balloons to set up a DIY photoshoot with my husband as the photographer and me as the make-up artist, stylist, and model. I had so much fun doing this! My day was made!
Our plans to celebrate our birthdays might have been canceled but this was much more meaningful! It was a party for 3 and need I say that the sparks were flying and love was everywhere in the house!
